| A Question For All Gamers (27th Apr 12 at 5:43am UTC) The Role of Games | | Are video games merely entertainment, or are they capable of being an art form or something similar?
I think they're capable of being an art form, of providing enveloping interactive narratives that the player is more able to connect and associate with than with books or movies, of documenting our societal successes and woes in a way that makes people care, of posing important questions in an interesting or appealing way, and of bringing people together to play great games like Battlefield. That's what I think.
But I'd like to hear what the rest of you think, I talk enough as it is :3

| Re: A Question For All Gamers (28th Apr 12 at 1:39pm UTC) | | Is social networking an art-form? A big part of online games (these days) is the social network behind it. As for what they address in the human condition... well, I don't think FPS do. Perhaps things like Skyrim (never played), Portal etc, might do this. certainly any game with a storyline (especially one that you can influence) is an exceptional piece of art. I think its also a great conduit for art. Think of some of the exceptional movies that have come from the BF series. It allows people to do some crazy stuff they couldn't do in real life. It allows actors to perform together from other sides of the world, without spending a penny on production costs!
I think all kinds of entertainment are an art form. and art is entertainment. Movies are definitely art, literature is, even roller-coasters must have an aspect of art to get some of the turns perfect...

I think yes that games with storylines are better at addressing issues or touching on specific subjects, but there seems indeed to be an art to even the more basic games (the art of noscoping/quickscoping in CoD games).
I also think they're a great "conduit for art" as you said due to their interactive nature, people watch movies and leave, but people really associate with video game characters especially ones they've spent hundreds of hours with. For example, I think people would be a lot less interested in the mass effect characters and universe or KOTOR characters/universe if they were viewing the story passively on the sidelines rather than actively talking and making decisions in them. The interactive element of video games has great potential to involve or engage I guess is what I'm saying. But I also agree with you that all forms of entertainment are an art in some way.
